Paternalism and Soda (scroll down for Rosser's letter)

Ezra Rosser is wrong (Letters, October 12, 2010: A24).

Through its massive agricultural subsidies of almost $4 billion per year for corn, the US government keeps the price of soda, laced with corn syrup, low for all of us.

I, too, have mixed emotions about this measure. On the one hand, there's no doubt that sugar and caffeine is not a healthful combination, especially for kids and teens. (See link for a newsfeed of Dr. John Preston talking about the problems associated with teens drinking too much caffeine.) On the other hand, I don't think it's right to target poor people specifically. This is a problem that affects everyone. If policies are to be made, let the policies affect everyone as well.
